Overview
The current growth of media technologies promises a wide range of possibilities for the creative industry. Global markets have been focusing on 8 core areas for the growth of the creative industry: Design, Film Production, Music, Moving and Interactive Media, Computer Games, Advertising, Gastronomy, and Tourism.
The creative industry particularly needs professionals who are well versed and have the capacity to engage in innovative uses of new displaying technologies, social networks, and computerized entertainment. Also, the creative industry requires professionals who are able to think across different communication platforms, who are highly knowledgeable about consumption trends, and who can develop new methods to be responsive to expectations and the needs of the consumers, not only in Türkiye but all over the world.
The market for creative entertainment products has been growing steadily since 2000 and is projected to continue to be one of the fastest-growing sectors in contemporary economies. According to UNESCO, when “cultural services” are included in the calculations, the USA is the largest exporter of creative entertainment products; followed by Europe (EU15) which has the leading position in many continents. Also, data suggest that the expansion of creative industries has recently been most rapid in Asia. According to the recent projections, Türkiye is expected to become one of the important actors in digital entertainment, especially in Eastern Europe, Middle-east and the Turkic region in Central Asia.
Taking these trends into consideration, the undergraduate program at Media and Visual Arts Department at Koç University aims to train professionals for the media component of the creative industry by providing an education that focuses on theoretical studies, creative practice, and management skills.
